SEO Keyword Name in Comments, Should I Approve Them?
This is a dofollow blog (yes it is) and have a top commentator widget (check my sidebar). This awesome feature of my blog bring bloggers and seoptimizers to temptation to comment more in this blog to get more backlinks and try to be included in my top commentator widget.
My question is.. Should I approve the comments of those commentators using SEO keywords as their name? I used to receive several comments that are named with SEO keyword names since the start of this blog. I am not pointing to anyone or somebody. When I see their names and comments in the edit comment page of my dashboard, I became skeptical whether to approve it ar mark as spam. Their comments is actually valid and does not look like a spam so I don’t know what to do. I just approve some of them because I don’t want to disappoint them and want to appreciate their time and effort in visiting my blog and commenting to my blog.
So what do you think? Should I approve, mark as spam, or delete them? Maybe you are also experiencing this skepticism in your comment page so I need your opinions

I too get many comments like names from Make Money Online etc. but i do approve them until they are meaningful and valid.
You too should not take care of the name part always, until the comment is valid.

I have lots of comment with SEO Keywords. If I know them it will be approved for sure.
If I don’t know and the site is too obvious only for keyword stuffing .. it will be going to the bin
I cannot say that i received alot of comments from my blog because my visitors are lazy to comment maybe because they are dying for laughing… Well… using seo keyword as their name is not spamming i guess.. for me everything is depends on their comments if it is nonsense or has a sense.. Well.. btw hussein i found out why akismet always marking my name as a spam it’s because my IP address changes every time i turn off the modem.. I am here in Japan and it is normally happen here

It all depends mate. I approve some, it’s all about the comment in the end. If it’s a good comment, not something like “Great post” I will usually approve it. I’m hard on finance & drugs keywords, otherwise it’s ok if the comment brings a little something to the discussion.

So you all mean that I should just ignore their names and instead focus on their comment quality?
Thanks for all your answers to my question.
I don’t think it hurts to approve comment that have keywords in it as long as the comment has some good stuff u=in and not just a lame oneliner.

i think you should consider if the comments are valid and useful.
one question though, is having a do-follow link on your comment box makes you share your page rank juice as well?
thats what hinders me back then (well, until now) if i should put up a do-follow tag on name comment box.
nice theme btw

Hey Hussein…
Well, as you can see, I always post comments under the name “Simple Sapien”, but at the end of my posts I will include my real name.
I guess I just want people to associate my opinions and my comments with my face, name, and website. It is not because I want to get the word “simple” or “sapien” in my link text. It is just a matter of branding my thoughts and website. It is up to you whether or not that is okay or not.
You see, no one types in “Simple Sapien” to find my site on Google. If I were to make my name “Simple Living Blog” or something like that, I could see why that would be inappropriate.
I don’t know… hehe.

it’s a personal choice really i guess. i know of someone who requires that there at least be a name there somewhere, so she can sort of properly address the person.

In fact, what is wrong in approving them as long as the comments themselves convey some good points?
However, instead of having the keywords alone, I would like to see ‘Name @ BlogName.com’ format (which keywordluv expects as well)
I also got the same comments with SEO keywords and some are porn names.. I approve some but need to edit their names or remove some of the links specially if it leads to a porn site..
just like what other commenters said just make sure the comment is relevant enough.. if you really don’t like the name or the Username that they used I think you are free to edit it.. IMO
@hinlalato: Yes it will help in pagerank as it will be a valid linkback.
Thanks again guys for your opinions!
@Hussein: Exactly that is what i meant to say

@Hussein: I think it is not do-followed.
I see the no-follow tag with the firefox extension i am using.

@Chetan: Only those commentators with more than 10 comments will be dofollowed.
i think you should consider if the comments are valid and useful.
I think it’s ok not to allow keywords as the persons name as long as it’s clear in the comment policy.
if you have a little bit before the entry form saying that using keywords as a username will make the comment go in the spam can then people will know straight away.
those that decide not to comment because they can’t use keywords aren’t really the kind of commentators that add to the discussion just for the sake of a back link.
whatever you decide, make it clear and stick to it!

If they are saying something worthy then why NOT.
If the comment is valid and something informative is being said, then whats the problem. Approve them

I would never use my ‘keyword’ as my name unless you had the keywordluv plugin installed. So, I think it’s ok to not approve those comments…although some people use this as ‘branding’.

If someone is obviously leaving a crap comment to boost their own pagerank then I’d say no. I skim through all my comments and anything that looks suspicious (casino, porn, viagra) is removed.
If it looks legit then it stays in. But I have to agree. Someone who constantly uses a bunch of keywords for their name is probably spamming you.

I would approve the comment as long as it’s a quality comment. If the Name was some long keyword like “Come and get (fill in the blank) cheap and free here” then I would just disapprove it because people don’t like to see that.

The bottom line my friend is, this is YOUR blog and you can do with it as you please.
I agree with Andy that you should write up an official comment policy with what you want (I have one also).
No one really reads them, but you can point to it for proof.
Like others here, I also don’t mind keywords, but, the “real name” has to be there somewhere…..before or after the keywords, or in the signature.

Btw - if you make it clear that links are not do-follow for the first 10 comments, A LOT of the real keyword spammers will not bother

Dennis Edell´s last blog post..Do Advertisers Judge You By Design? What Do You Think…
Yes, I agree, you should make the links nofollow for the first 10 or so comments, that will definitely make people invest more time into providing quality content and many spammers will just give up at the start.
As of the seo names (keywords) - I’m ok with that (as you might guess
)
As long as the content is valuable, then why not?
However, you should always delete the 1-sentence posts like “great article” “cool stuff” etc.
Cheers!
